After the Great Fire in 1842, Hamburg undergoes a period of industrialization. The inhumane living conditions need to be changed. The idea of cooperative self-help comes into being and is supported by wealthy citizens. The cholera epidemic which hits Hamburg in 1892 provides the final impetus for establishing a building and savings cooperative named "Hamburger Bau- und Sparverein eingetragene Genossenschaft mit beschränkter Haftung".
